SOCIAL STUDIES:
The students are just finishing a very exciting visit to Ancient Egypt. I had them visit a fun, educational website under Classzone.com to explore Egypt further. Ask them to show you this interesting site. There second Geography Map Test was excellent, with almost the entire grade receiving A’s! Great work! The unit test for Egypt will probably be during the last week in January.
Next, Mrs. Devine will teach about Ancient Africa and India. This should bring the students through the end of March or early April. The map tests will include more places, but I trust that the students will do great!!
MATH: We just finished the chapter on Base, Rate and Percentage Problems. This is basically an application of percents and setting up proportions, equations and solving for missing variables, all Pre-Algebra concepts. Now the students will be spending quite a bit of time on Consumer Math. Students enjoy this chapter because it relates to their everyday life and is very hands-on. They will study about concepts like Sales Tax, Discount, Commission, Interest, Budgeting and Check Writing. They will go on an in-class Shopping Spree, Create a Budget on the computer and keep a Check Registry. Share some of your everyday experiences with your child to help make connections to the “real world.”
